Hi and welcome to my page. My name is Dean Meagher and I'm a 4th Year Student in Limerick Institute of Technology. I am studying Chemical Instrumentation and Analysis. For my final year project I am developing an educational website for students to help with the Instrumentation in Chemistry. The reason I chose this project was to help me further my experience in teaching as I hope to be accepted to a teacher training programme. I hope you find the information helpful and please feel free to leave comments in the evaluation section.
Chemical Instrumentation
Chemical Instrumentation is an integral part of discovery, analysis and development of modern science. Today there is a vast array of powerful instruments and techniques for obtaining Qualitative and Quantitative information about the composition and structure of matter. An uderstanding of instrumentation in chemistry can help chemists solve analytical and chemical problems.Instruments used in chemical analyisis and separation, convert information about the physical or chemical characterisitics of a compound to information that can be interpreted by a person.
In the chemistry syllabus at the moment Chemical Instrumentation is covered in the Organic Chemistry chapter, The big focus in the Leaving Certificate is on Chromatography and Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Each type of Instrumentation contains different techniques but all are used in the Qualitative and Quantitatve analyisis.

Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis
There are two reasons why chemical instrumentation is important. These are Qualitative and Quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis is analysis carried out on a compound to see exactly what it is and what it is made up of. This type of analysis helps determine the purity of a compound and can identify any unwanted impurities present. Quantitative analysis goes hand in hand with Qualitative analysis. Quantitative analysis determines the amount of the compound present. This analysis is vital in the pharmaceutical industry and forensic science.
Uses of Chemical Instrumentation
Chemical Instruments are used in all aspects of Science. They are used to identify compounds and quantify the analytes. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages over another but when combined can tell us a lot about specific compounds. Chemical techniques are used in all chemical and pharmaceutical labs. They are used in Forensic analyis of crime scenes, chemical weapons, drug analysis etc. It is also very important in Environmental analysis to determine pollutants in the atmosphere, rivers, land etc.
